What Is SNAP?

SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It’s the largest food assistance program in the United States, providing monthly funds to help low- and moderate-income households buy groceries. In Texas, SNAP benefits are loaded onto a Lone Star Card, which works just like a debit card at most major grocery stores and many farmers' markets across Houston.

SNAP isn’t a charity. It’s a federal program you have the right to access if you qualify.

Could You Qualify for SNAP?

SNAP eligibility in Texas is based on a few key factors. You may qualify if your household gross income is at or below 165% of the federal poverty level (roughly $2,152/month for a single person or $4,421/month for a family of four), you are a US citizen or qualifying non-citizen, and you meet basic residency and identity requirements.

Many people who qualify for SNAP never apply because they’re not sure whether they’re eligible. You don’t have to figure that out on your own. The Unlock My Benefits screener takes about two minutes and gives you a personalized look at what you may qualify for, including SNAP and other programs.

Completing the screener is not a benefits determination. It’s a free, no-pressure way to get a clearer picture of your options.

How Much Could You Receive?

The amount of grocery assistance you get depends on your household size and income. The less you earn, the more you receive. Texas calculates your benefit by taking about 30 cents out of every dollar of your monthly net income and subtracting that from the maximum allowed for your household size. Here's what those maximums look like for 2026:

  • 1 person: up to $298/month

  • 2 people: up to $546/month

  • 3 people: up to $785/month

  • 4 people: up to $994/month

For example, a single person with $800 in monthly net income would receive roughly $58/month, while a family of four with little to no income could receive the full $994. Most households land somewhere in between.

For many Houston families, SNAP benefits mean that money that would have gone toward groceries can go toward rent, utilities, childcare, or medical bills.

How Does SNAP Work?

Once approved for SNAP in Texas, your benefits are loaded onto your Lone Star Card each month. You can use it at most grocery stores, supermarkets, and many farmers' markets. It works exactly like a regular debit card at checkout, with no special process and no extra attention drawn to you at the register.

What Can I Buy With SNAP?

SNAP covers most everyday grocery items, including fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, bread, cereals, grains, snack foods, and non-alcoholic beverages. You can also use SNAP to purchase seeds and plants that produce food for your household.

SNAP cannot be used for alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, hot prepared foods, or household supplies. For a full breakdown of what is and is not covered, visit the Texas HHS SNAP purchase restrictions page.

Real People. Trusted Partners. Proven Results.

Our work speaks through the Houstonians we’ve helped and the organizations we stand alongside.

Take Robert, a lifelong Houstonian who found himself homeless after falling on hard times despite years of steady work. Through Connective's partner network, he connected with the Wesley Community Center and received $292 a month in SNAP benefits and support for dental care. "It's helping me a lot," Robert said. "I'm just trying to get back on my feet."

Robert's story is one of thousands. As reported by KPRC Click2Houston, Connective has helped families unlock an average of $300 per month in benefits and, in some cases, up to $2,000.

We work alongside trusted community organizations across Greater Houston, including:

  • Houston Food Bank

  • Harris County Public Health

  • Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

  • Chinese Community Center

  • Target Hunger

  • Wesley Community Center

Together, we're making sure no one misses out on the grocery assistance and support they've earned.
